Language Games

Hey redditors. This probably isn't directly related to language learning, but at my high school I'm creating a multilingual translating club, which can also act as a place where students can practice and improve their own foreign languages. My school has a club fair coming up where we're given booths and students come around looking at different clubs. There the clubs have to kind of sell themselves. So, what activities or what decorations should we have at our booth, of course, related to our club goal and mission? Any suggestions are welcomed and thanks in advance

I need help with Portuguese verb tenses!

I'm learning Portuguese to go to the Azores islands next summer, and Babbel is teaching me verbs using parallel second and third person. (Como, come, come, comemos, comem, comem). But when I check out verbs online, all persons are unique (como, comes, come, comemos, comeis, comem). Which form is commonly used in European Portuguese? I don't want to sound bad!

Been learning for close to a year now. Feel like I've ran out of stuff to study. I talk with natives daily and read but don't have a course anymore because I finished it, what other ways can I improve Spanish alone at home?

Cant decide, need some more experienced help.

I cannot decide between german, italian, russian, and polish. I already know very basic german and I love their culture. I love the way italian sounds and love their culture as well. My grandparents come from russia and I think it would be a rewarding challenge. Poland seems like a nice place to visit. I cannot decide which one I should learn first. I am in no hurry to learn any of them. I've tried learning german, but the resources I've had (duolingo) have been pretty ineffective and confusing. My library lets patrons use mango languages, rosetta stone, and duolingo premium for free. Is mango languages or rosetta stone any good? If not, what are some resources that can get me to around the A2 level effectively? Sorry if you get a lot of these questions here, I don't really know who else to ask.

Duolingo Stories is actually amazing

I don't know when they released the feature, but I went back to Duolingo just to see what has changed and discovered Duolingo Stories.

Needless to say, it's incredible. All of the voices, text, questions and answers (that you need to actively select to progress the story and to indicate if you understand what is going on) are in that language.

For me, I study Spanish, so it's great to read, listen to the voices and text (with surprisingly minimal pictures) and be asked questions in complete Spanish. It's incredible for immersion and learning.

If you can't find dual language books or feel odd buying kids books, I highly recommend Duolingo Stories.

Help with Thai pronunciation บ and ป

I cannot for the life of me vocalise บ and ป. I have tried to with native speakers but i'm told I am only ever sounding บ and very rarely ป. The difference is so subtle to me, are there any vocal exercises I can do to help?

Weekly Question/Discussion Thread - October 14, 2018

If you are new and/or have basic questions about language learning, please read the Wiki before posting. Language specific resources can be found there too. You are welcome to post any follow-up questions.

Welcome to the Weekly Discussion Thread. Each week on Sunday 18:00 UTC, I, your faithful Automoderator, will be hosting a thread in which beginners and pros alike may ask questions, share any interesting insights they may have discovered or simply share with the sub their recent achievements.

Anything may be posted, but Weekly Question/Discussion is primarily intended for posts/insights/questions too small to warrant a new thread and for beginners to ask questions and seek help without the embarrassment of having to clog up the main page.

Please consider sorting by new.

French or German?

I wanna start learning a new language next month, and wanted to ask your opinion

  1. I've previously studied German for 7 years from when I was 7 till 14 but I completely stopped when I went to high school. I haven't spoken it since, but I believe the majority of the words and grammar would come back really easily.
  2. I've never learnt French but I do speak Spanish so that'd make it a bit easier.

I'm equally motivated to learn both, but probably French would be more useful for me as I travel a lot and it is more widely spoken.

On the other hand I do have 3 languages that I started learning in the past (German, Danish & Chinese) but only got to beginner level so maybe it's a better idea to just work on German which I already started?

Anyone has made a similar decision?

I want to learn too many languages simultaneously - how to stick to 1-2 languages?

I'm currently learning 6 languages simultaneously: Swedish (advanced), German (intermediate; I used to speak it fluently when I was little and now I'm relearning it), Mandarin (lower intermediate; it's a school subject), Icelandic (lower intermediate), French (intermediate) and Norwegian (intermediate)

I don't have any problems with mixing them up or time management - I just don't have much free time so I can only study each language for 20-30min a day which makes the progress really slow...so I would like to focus on 1-2 languages instead, but it's hard for me to choose which ones I should drop - I will lose my current progress and I really love all of those 6 languages so I don't want to drop any of them because not studying any of them makes me feel "empty" for some reason and I regret dropping it...

What should I do?

What place is a language learner's paradise?

Which country, city, or region would you most love to spend time in as a language learner? For me, I have been dreaming about going for a long time to Spain. Spanish is my L2, and I'm nearly fluent, while Spain's various regions also have some really awesome, thriving languages (Catalan, Basque) that I have been dying to learn. I daydream about immersing myself in these regional languages while knowing I could always fall back on Spanish in an emergency. I also like that the natives aren't likely to keep switching to English on me like in many other parts of Europe. What is your language learning paradise?

Passive vocabulary -> Active

Hello, i'm currently expanding my vocabulary in english, which is my second language. The procedure i follow is:

read books > find unknown words > look up the definition and make up sentences with them > load them on anki.

This helps tremendously my passive vocabulary (i have learnt 500 new words in a little over a year), not so much my active though. Do you have any tips on making these passive new words, active?

I am planning to go to study in the netherlands next year, so i will have to speak english with people and stuff, but for now consider my computer the only medium that i can use the english language.

thanks!

edit: for example i thought that maybe i could write down 4-5 passive words each day, and use them in my reddit comments. it would be better to hear a successfully tested method by someone who has done it before though.
