Now is the best time in history to learn languages

Most of us learn languages at school, from teachers who are trained in that language and in language teaching. Most school learners study just one language because of a lack of teachers trained in other languages. Yet in most cases these school learners fail to achieve a high level of competence even in the only language they are learning. These learners do not become polyglots. We need a new language learning strategy, one that aims to create polyglots. We can take advantage of modern information technology and the Internet to help learners young and old explore whatever languages interest them. These may be languages from the same language family, or languages that are from different language families, but with a shared history and culture. These may be widely spoken languages, or languages with few speakers. Learners can be empowered to learn the languages that interest them. Teachers will need to be trained in guiding learners on how to learn from the variety of text, video, audio, music, animation and other content that is readily available on the Internet. There are also online grammar reference resources, and other online help, available at anyone’s fingertips. To provide an example of how this works, I will talk about my own experience in exploring different languages and cultures; Romance, Germanic, Slavic, Asian, Middle Eastern, and more. I will talk about what I did and how these languages opened up new worlds for me.
