Minority Language Resources

I just found this video about how to get resources for minority languages and I'd like to share it with you. For anyone that doesn't feel like watching the whole video (and for myself as well), I'm going to make a summary below.

  • Make a folder for all the resources you can find
  • Gather information from the Wikipedia page
    • Check the External Links and Notes and download or save everything you can find
  • Also google other names for the language and search Youtube
  • Try to find apps for your language
  • Search Glottolog for your language in order to get articles that were written about it
    • Also search academic websites (Google Scholar, Academia.edu, ResearchGate, etc)
  • The Bible is translated to basically all languages in both written and spoken forms, which is great for input, so go to this website for the Bible
    • Compare it to a version in a language you already know and write down new vocabulary
    • Also search for "Jesus film [target language]" on Youtube because there may be a version in your TL
  • Don't start by writing down every single word, just the basic ones that you think will be useful for a beginner level.
    • Sort these words between nouns, verbs, etc.
  • Check the articles you've found for grammar explanations
  • If you can find native speakers, talk to them and ask for help
    • Try iTalki, HelloTalk, r/language_exchange etc. and try your luck
    • Maybe try to find them on Facebook

Glottolog and the Bible website were life changing for me.
