Question to Arabic experts: Is it common for the letter م (meem) to disappear after ل (lam) in written language?

As the title says, I encountered this case quite often while doing exercises or just practice reading texts and I'm wondering, if there's a rule for that or it's just a part of the writing system.

Here's an example, just in case my title isn't clear enough: ألمانيا

The word is "almanya" (Germany), and as you can see, the letter meem م is nowhere to be seen. Instead, the letter lam ل has some kind of "hook" attached to its back, which I've never seen before, while studying the letters.

Would be great if somebody could explain this occurence.
