This may be a bit of a stupid question but between French and German (assuming native English), which would you say would take longer to get to the level of being able to read the average "popular fiction" novel comfortably? Lets define "comfortably" in this case as reading at a steady pace and only having to look up some grammar point or new word every 1-2 minutes.
I've heard the difficult points in German involve more complicated grammar/less shared vocabulary compared to French, so would I be right to assume you'd get to this level faster with French, all else being equal (motivation, interest, learning materials)?
