i'm a native english speaker and i've been trying to learn (TL) spanish for about a year. i started because my boyfriend introduced me to reggaeton, then i took a break from bedside nursing and worked on a farm in puerto rico for a month, and then i moved to southern california where about 20-30% of my patients only speak spanish.
i want to learn how to speak spanish so i can connect with my patients. i will always use a qualified and hospital approved translator for important conversations about care and treatment, but i want to be able to ask patients about their family and life, how they are resting and if they're eating well, if they feel comfortable, etc. i think it's important part of care in the hospital that i feel gets overlooked when relying on a translator for everything.
i don't think duolingo has been entirely useless. i started not knowing more than maybe ten words in spanish, but now i feel like im able to piece things together when i listen to a spanish conversation. but thats also the issue - i feel like the learning curve has stalled and i can only piece things together when i listen. i have no confidence in speaking spanish. i started taking preply one on one lessons last month, which is still new and i have hope for. but im wondering if there is anything else out there that im missing that could help me? if there is anyone out there with any advice or pointers i would be so greatly appreciative.
this request is not specific to spanish, i hope to also learn other languages i encounter frequently at work (farsi, mandarin, portuguese).
