I’m learning German (TL) and I feel like I’m stuck in an awkward stage where learner content is too easy and native content is too difficult.
I started by learning vocabulary with Anki and worked my way through roughly the A1–B1 vocabulary. After that, I started watching and listening to German content aimed at learners around A2/B1 level.
The problem is that I understand most of this content quite easily now. The language is slow, clearly spoken, and simplified, so I can follow it without too much effort. But I find it boring and not interesting , which makes it difficult to stay motivated.
On the other hand, when I try to watch things that I actually find interesting — normal YouTube videos, documentaries, entertainment, etc. — I suddenly understand much less. People speak much faster, use vocabulary I don’t know, mumble, use slang, and generally speak in a way that is much harder to follow.
I’m aware that I’m probably taking a somewhat lazy approach by mostly trying to “force myself” to understand German through listening/watching rather than doing more structured study. But I’m wondering if there is something I can do in the middle to bridge this gap.
