Is it worth building a language app with mandatory same-gender matching to stop the "Tinder effect"?
Hey everyone,
I’ve been reading a lot of threads here about how frustrating language exchange has become because platforms like Tandem/HelloTalk are flooded with people looking for relationships, hookups, or visas rather than actually studying.
I'm a developer considering building a bootstrapped, purely education-first language exchange app, but I want to know if the market actually wants it.
The Core Mechanics: To completely kill the "dating app vibe," the platform would enforce two major rules:
- Mandatory Same-Gender Filtering: Men only match with men, women only match with women. This instantly removes 95% of the casual swipers and creeps who use these apps strictly to flirt with the opposite sex.
- No Visual Feed: Shifting the focus away from profile photos and putting it onto text/voice notes.
I know this drastically limits the matching pool, but my goal is quality over quantity—connecting serious learners who want to study in a zero-distraction environment.
My questions for serious learners:
- Would you switch to a platform like this if it meant a safer, cleaner environment, even if it took slightly longer to find a partner?
- Do you think same-gender matching is enough to fix the dating app problem, or does the issue run deeper?
- What features would a new language exchange app need to have to make you leave Tandem or HelloTalk?
Would appreciate any brutal, honest feedback before I build this. Thanks!
