Why do grammar mistakes stick even after you understand the rules?

Ive been noticing something frustrating in my learning process and Im curious if others deal with the same thing.

Ill spend time understanding a grammar rule, read explanations, see examples, and it all makes sense in the moment. But when I actually try to write on my own later, I end up repeating the same mistakes like I never learned it in the first place.

Its not even that I dont recognize the correct version sometimes when I reread what I wrote, I can spot the mistake instantly. But during writing, it just slips through.

Recently I started paying more attention to patterns in my own errors instead of just learning new rules. Ive been mixing different approaches too reading, writing, and some light self-testing (things like small exercises or quiz-style sites, I even came across one called grammarerror while trying different formats). That helped a bit, but I still feel like the transfer from understanding actually using is the hardest part.

Is this just a normal stage in language learning? Or is there something specific people do to bridge that gap more effectively?

Would love to hear how others dealt with this, especially if youve gone through that phase where you know the rule but still mess it up when it matters.
