Lately I've been feeling such frustration regarding anything to do with my parents' native language. Both of my parents are from french speaking countries. They did try to teach me during kindergarden, but eventually mostly stopped, because they were worried that my first language would suffer. Now I do speak german and english fluently, but my french is lacking. I do understand it to a certain degree, but I can only build pretty basic sentences. It makes you feel like such a fraud, to not know your own language of two countries you're from. It makes me ashamed to even mention my nationalities, because I can't even speak the language. This has ruined the language for me honestly. I don't feel like I will ever be able to learn it now, which is also my fault. My message with this post is: Teach your kids your language! Languages are such a beautiful thing and build connection to cultures. I'm still young so I can still learn french, but I just feel so disconnected from it now and I'm too embarassed to even try. Does anyone have a similar experience to share? Thanks for reading.
