How the same word (多謝) is used differently?

I’ve been learning both Mandarin and Cantonese, and I noticed the phrase 多謝 shows up in both. In Mandarin I usually hear people say 謝謝 instead, but in Cantonese it feels like 多謝 is the default.

For those who speak either (or both), what’s the actual difference in meaning or usage between 多謝 in Mandarin and in Cantonese? Do they sound formal, casual, or are they used in different situations?
