Polyglots - have you passed down this trait to your children or helped them learn a language?

Hello, I am somewhat of a polyglot that I discovered on my own. No one helped me or taught me until I took formal classes in school. In elementary school I would go to the library and pick up foreign language books on my own. Overall as a child and young person I was fairly self motivated not just in this endeavor but in sports and other things.

I don’t know where self motivation or desire to learn languages/ear for languages come from but I know it wasn’t pushed on me. I have a 12 week old and sometimes I listen to a storytelling podcast in Italian and recite the lines back to him for my own practice but I secretly hope he’ll be interested in languages. It’s something I know I could help him with and I would enjoy doing with him.

I know immersion is key to learning but I was able to learn very well on my own without being immersed. Recently, I toured a Montessori daycare where they teach mandarin and Spanish to infants. That’s nice and all, but we’re not sending him there and I’m a strong believer in intrinsic motivation and that you don’t need fancy things, tutors, coaches, to be smart or good at things. Although I don’t deny those things can help a talented and self-motivated person.

I want to teach my son (Italian at least) but I don’t really know teaching methods and I’m hesitant to push my hobby on him.

Question - to those with ear for languages, do you think you passed the trait to your children? Or have any of you decided to assist in teaching them and how did it go?
