I can’t learn new vocabulary. I’ve tried all the tips out there, but nothing’s working. It’s funny because years ago I taught myself English from scratch and picked up words so easily. I knew nothing and it was smooth as a butter to remember tons of new words. But now, 6-8 years later, every time I try to learn new words, I fail miserably.
I gave Anki a shot with its spaced repetition, but it’s not working for me. I honestly don’t know why.
I also can’t create my own mnemonics or even borrow someone else’s. My brain just doesn’t get it. I know that a big part of expanding vocabulary is learning words in context.
I watch TV shows or read the news and see words I’ve encountered a million times, but for some reason I still can’t remember what they even mean. I keep opening the dictionary to check a word, but I forget them afterwards, every single time. I'm not trying to remember super-specific, niche words that nobody ever uses, nope, I'm talking about quite common words (like deposition, posterity, shortcomings, espoused, unscathed etc etc).
When I use context in Anki, it feels like cheating. After a few repetitions, my own context serves as a great hint that helps me recall the answer (definition). But if I come across that same word somewhere else, in a different context, it’s like my brain hits a wall, I don't remember the definition anymore. Or even my own context. I don't understand what is wrong with my memory. I don't feel like the same person I used to be.
