So I've been learning Mandarin Chinese for about 9 years but feel like I've been stuck at an advanced plateau for 3 or 4. I haven't been terribly consistent about my studies, likely due to neurodivergence, but I also get easily discouraged or bored. It's hard to keep at it when you feel like you're not as good as you should be. I was wondering if anyone has advice on how to approach a near native level.
Currently my reading is quite good, though I encounter unfamiliar vocab or structures often; my accent is better than my peers; and my overall knowledge of the language is decent.
However, I struggle terribly with listening, especially when people speak more naturally or use difficult language. I also struggle to express myself well or do so colloquially. I've excelled beyond other learners in the past but now feel like everyone's caught up to or surpassed me.
What would be a good regimen to: - perfect my accent? - speak more naturalistically and be able to accurately express myself? - understand spoken Chinese in a variety of situations?
Anyone have resources or pointers?
My current idea is to do a lot of listening from different native sources, do intensive vocab/grammar study via native reading materials, shadow or record myself speaking, and maybe get feedback on typed materials of my own. Is this a good plan? Does it leave gaps?
