Online RPG language learning simulator in virtual worlds

I have been working on a language simulator that takes place in an online virtual world called Decode:

Live website: www.decodeapp.io

You can explore and learn languages either completely solo or with other users:

  • Play solo: Practice speaking, reading, and writing through language simulations in a wide range of everyday life scenarios and environments. For instance go to the local bakery and order some fresh bread to later go to a private dinner party and learn how to mingle with new friends in your target language. You can also make your own learning journey through our framework we have combined with data models like GPT-3 and speech models. Anyone can build new modules and share with the community.
  • Play with others: Invite your teacher or match with new language exchange friends to explore the same language simulations together over text, audio, and/or video. You can filter and match with people who only want to use text/audio and not video calls if that is too much for you. You decide your comfortability and when you want to move on from solo simulations to practice with others!

I believe that learning a language is most effective when self-study is combined with real-world practice, meaningfully interacting with other people. Therefore, I have designed the journey to help you gain an understanding of the fundamentals as a beginner through isolated language simulations with carefully constructed lessons in a 100% solo mode.

Once you have gained enough confidence, I provide you with opportunities to play with real people (teachers or language exchange friends). Once again, you can learn 100% solo or try talking with real people over text, audio, or/and video (you decide your level of interaction, for instance, you can go with only using audio and text if video calls are too much for you).

  • What do you think about this concept of learning languages in a virtual world?
  • Would you enjoy playing solo or together with other people?
  • Do you think there are any major limitations and issues with this approach in contrast with other methods?
