If a language is far different than English does it make it easier to learn? I knew a polyglot who said Mandarin Chinese was incredibly easy to learn, they said the writing system is difficult. I thought about this today as I came across Luke Smith's blog of another polyglot who said the same thing (I'll post below). I'm not sure what the mechanisms are from anecdotes from friends I have conflicting narratives. - An Italian friend learning Spanish said it was difficult because it was so similar to Italian he got everything mixed up. -Friend learning Navajo, said it is so different from English many of the concepts are hard to grasp, and he couldn't get a hang of it. -Friend learning Hebrew, because it was different from everything - writing system, grammar, vocabulary, it was easy to learn and get a grasp of. I know it is dependent on the person but wanted to get your take on it. If a language is far different than English does it make it easier to learn?
