Forgot the name of a language learning method

I believe it was an American who invented it (or Japanese? One of the two haha) and its main principle consists in learning by heart commonly used set phrases, such as « The weather is good today » or « I have a stomach ache ». I remember that it was depicted as an ineffective way to learn as you don’t learn about the grammar, but well it seems to be commonly used in handbooks so maybe it’s a quick even not in depth way of learning.

Hope this subreddit can help :)
