Me and my friend are in a argument over the pronunciation of semi

I prounounce semi like sem-eye and he pronounces it like sem-e. He then argued that if I prounounce semi my way then demi would be pronounced as dem-eye. So how are the two words pronounced so I can prove him wrong?
