Is translating a good practice for language learning?

Most of us, when speaking a second language do have a accent and sometimes we do express things in our second language just in a way like we would express it in our native language. This means we’ve a link that connects one language to the other. Wouldn’t translating be an effective exercise to help us to enforce this link and also to reduce the “I don’t know how to express it in my second language” problem?

Edit 1: I also would be grateful, if somebody shares your own experience with translating as a language learning exercise.
