Grammar vs vocabulary

Recently I can across a YouTube video where a person was explaining how they learned Russian. Basically what he said was to completely ignore complex grammar and cases at the beginning and just learn as much vocabulary as possible.

One of the comments was from a native Russian speaker who said if you don’t understand grammar at all and mess up all the word positions and endings, everyone will still understand 99% of what you are saying. Also that you’ll sound pretty funny to Russians, but that grammar is just used to keep the sentences smooth.

I also know that in a lot of languages messing up grammar can completely change the meaning of the sentence. Is this applicable to other languages as well? Do you believe one should focus mostly on soaking up as much vocabulary as they can when starting a new language and perhaps take up grammar at a later stage, maybe through immersion?

Thanks
