Hello. So this is a "which language should I learn" post. I did read the guidelines about this question and I hope I stay within the bounds.
Here's the deal. I have been a dedicated Buddhist practitioner for most of my life- mostly in the Tibetan tradition but also in the SE Asian tradition to an extent.
I would really like to learn a language of a predominantly Buddhist country. English is my native language, I am conversant and comfortable in Spanish and French; my Italian and Russian are better than intermediate.
Here's what I want: the easiest language (for someone who has the language history that I do) for a predominantly Buddhist country. I don't have the bandwidth for a language as hard as Russian, for example.
While I love the sound of Tibetan and the people, I spent six months of private tutoring, and it was a nightmarishly hard language. The verb system is so different from European languages that it felt analogous to some indigenous mesoamerican languages.
People keep telling me that the easiest Asian languages are Tagalog and Bahasa Indonesia, but neither of those countries has large Buddhist populations.
Mods: if this is out of line, my apologies. Please let me know how I can clean it up.
Any help, thoughts, or critique welcome as long as it's constructive and well-meaning.
