I live with somebody who has been studying Spanish since grade school and cannot speak it to save their life and is not Latino/Hispanic in any way, but feels the need to constantly say Lo Siento and Per Favor and it grates on my ears, they have also named her dog Chato. Also this same person is now moving on to French despite never really getting to a decent level in Spanish, citing "boredom". I find it cheesy, and am perplexed as to why so many people do this in America, especially with Spanish. My question is this: is it problematic to casually learn a language and sprinkle it into your life? Or does this have absolutely no importance at all?
I feel like an asshole being this pissed off by this, despite hating the outweighed importance people place in "hard languages" when its impressive to attain a decent level in any language, I still feel miffed when I see people toying around with languages and never attaining a decent level in a language I can't help but perceive as "easy". I seriously hate that I feel this way, as it's a continuation of a rather toxic side of language learning communities, in the lionizing of people that learn "difficult" languages to any level, and the derision of those who stay within "safe" Romance territory. I want to break away from this, because language learning is very humbling and it's almost impossible to say one has attained complete expertise. How do people feel about this? How do others react to feeling like people are approaching language learning all wrong?
