How to tell the difference between my accent and me just being inept at pronunciation

Pretty much that. There are some words that, for the life of me, I can't pronounce properly. I can hear that I'm pronouncing them wrong, I try to get closer, but with no progress. I'm also pretty confident that there are words that I'm pronouncing wrong that I don't even notice. So is there a difference? Is that just what an accent is? If so, is there any hope of becoming more intelligible or is there some sort of wall that I'm doomed to be forever trapped on the other side of?
