My French learning strategy

So I posted in this group a few weeks ago about my French journey from O to A2-B1 “ish” after 4 months of study. (Link below)

In the last month I’ve been reevaluating all my skills and have come to realize certain skills are way behind/ahead of others . My main focus was listen and speaking. So if I had to break down my skills by level it would be: Listening-B1 Reading-A2 Speaking-A2 Writing-A1

I started to practice on duolingo and I really must say duolingo has come a LONG way, I haven’t used it in a long time. I feel duolingo is crucial in helping to learn which words are masculine vs feminine and just general reinforcement of how French sentences are structured . I regret not incorporating this tool into my practice earlier .

So moving forward my plan to reach a C1

  • duolingo 30 min per day for writing practice or until I complete the tree ( it currently only goes up to A2) -Italki tutor 30 min 4 days a week
  • 30min vocab memorization -30-1hr per day of either tv, podcast , whatever any sort of listening activity

1 thing Steve Kauffman constantly stresses (and it’s so true) , is the importance of building up your exposure to words. This is where memorizing sheer quantity of vocab comes in handy . My 1st italki lesson ever was AWFUL . The teacher was mean and I probably knew less than 20 words in French , it was a complete waste of time . In the space between my 1st and 2nd lesson I took a few weeks and memorized as many words as I could. This was a game changer . I could say tons of basic things and start to have the beginnings of a crude conversation lol. 4 months later after spending hours on Anki , I can say my vocab is fairly large, however I often can’t conjugate the verb perfectly or recall the word when I want to say it but my brain is able to recognize the word and understand it if it’s spoken to me . The benefit of this is I’m able to follow the conversation at a much higher level even if my my ability to respond is at a lower level.

Stage 2 of this memorization strategy I’m doing is now memorizing a lot of these words in all of their most used forms, passé composé , imparfait , future simple etc... (shoooooot me )this is miserable but my progress has stalled until I can manipulate all of the root words I know in their various forms at will.

I’ll check back in with y’all in a few weeks to let ya know what’s good.

Side note I apologize for any bad grammar , witting this post from my phone in the airport is challenging .
