Portuguese for a beginner

I have recently started learning Portuguese. I meet with my tutor once a week and we go through a dialogue text and some grammar.

In my spare time I am we revisiting what we covered in our lesson and making my own notes but is there anything else I can do for this to stick? Like sometimes I am reading over a phrase and the next day I cannot recall it Word for Word.

Also the accent, I am struggling to get the accent and find myself pronouncing some words with a Spanish accent.
