Is it possible to learn a language with a dictionary and reading texts?

I find memorizing words monotonous. Can I just read through children's books, comics, then young adult, then fiction, then classics (all with a dictionary) and figure stuff out contextually? I don't really care about holding a conversation, I just want to be able to read some texts that interest me in another language without having to wait for translations.
