Why can I understand sentences in English but can't translate them to my native language right away even though I know what it means?

For example when in school our English teacher asks me to translate a sentence to our native language I sometimes can't do it (at least right away) even though I know perfectly what the sentence means. Is there a word for this? Our teacher always says to translate a sentence to our native language in your head to understand it but I don't have to do that to understand it.
