I want to learn Chinese characters only to understand what they mean so I can read in Chinese but I don't yet care to learn how to speak or understand spoken Chinese.
I also want to learn to understand spoken and written Japanese (but don't care to speak it myself).
Should I start with learning to read Chinese or Japanese?
