People that learned Latin as 2nd language in high school, did it really help you a lot in learning Romance languages later?

My nephew and his dad just came to us for our family event last week. He talked a lot about his new hs, especially his choosing of Latin class. I asked why he chose it, he simply told me that his advisor encouraged him to learn Latin, instead of Spanish or French. The advisor believes Latin is a fastest bridge for Romance languages learning later, plus Latin will help improve English vocabs a lot

I never took Latin in hs before, so i have no idea about that. How true is it? Did it really help you for Romance languages learning later?
