I have been toying with the idea of learning a language for two or three years (I am mono English speaker) but something that has prevented me from the motivation for learning a new language is not having an idea if I am making progress, and this comes to my question... how do you go from not understanding a word or part of the language to understanding it? What is the intermediate step? I am shocked that all of the books and materials I have read about language learning never actually explain how people learn languages at that level.
