I saw a video the other day of the last monolingual speaker of Irish, and I was surprised by how similar his speech sounded to Russian! I've noticed that native English speakers who learn Irish as a second language tend to have a very Anglicized pronunciation. My question is, do native speakers of Russian or other Slavic languages who learn Irish as a second language tend to be able to give a more native pronunciation due to the languages' similar phonemic inventories and distinctions between palatalized and velarized consonants?
