Which languages in which order?

I'm curious what people think which would work better for someone new to language learning because I've heard several philosophies, what does the current science say?

If you learn one romance language stick with them until you learn all that you desire, eg. Spanish then French then Italian then if you want to learn Japanese then Mandarin then Cantonese but don't mix.

Others say you should mix, Spanish then Japanese then French then Mandarin then Italian then Cantonese, the idea being that by alternating you won't cross signals as much, like slipping into Italian when you're trying to speak French, or Japanese when trying to speak Mandarin.

So what's the current science say? Keep pushing in a single language family or alternate between two if your goal is the learn 4 or more languages? Or is there another way to do this?
