Do you learn words that you don't even know in your native language?

Can you tell an elm from a linden apart? Of course you can't, don't be ridiculous! Still, there are probably some words for these species both in your native & in your target language. Also, even though you most likely wouldn't recognise them in the wild, there might be some cultural significance to them. At the least, it'd certainly be nice if you knew that these are trees we're talking about (yes, trees.)

So the question is: do you learn these words? How do you decide which words to learn? How do you go about learning them?
