Any French speakers out there? I’ve got a question about asking questions

In French class I always learned your questions had to start with “question words” like “comment” “est-ce que” “quelle/quel” or “qu’est-ce que” (there may be others but I’m not thinking of them right now).

But I dropped French class for a year and now I’m using Duolingo to practice for a placement test and it keeps counting those answers as wrong. Eg “est-ce que vous voulez aller au cinéma” is wrong but “voulez-vous aller au cinéma” is right.

So when do I use a question word and when do I not? Or are they both right
