Speak just one or understand many? Depth or breadth?

Is it wrong to want to understand content in many languages instead of learning to speak one to fluency?

It seems that every blog out there advises to stick to just one or two languages. Since I'm not a social creature, learning speaking would be overrated (mantaining even only English and Polish is a task in itself). But since the polyglots represent authority (or at least expertise), going against their recommendation doesn't come easy.

This is where you (as another authority) come in. Is learning many languages to shallow level simply to understand them considered frivolous?
