The Thai word in UNESCO's poster for International Mother Language Day is not typeset properly. I wonder if any other words are also malformed or unseemly in any other way.

I'm too lazy to find an appropriate channel to write to UNESCO or the UN about this so instead I'm gonna whine on Reddit 😜

Apparently in a few days it's going to be International Mother Language Day. The poster features a word cloud in the shape of the 'dove and olive branch' peace symbol, with the word 'peace' in many different languages. But a few things are off, like the Thai word 'สันติภาพ' near the tail, in which each of the upper vowels floats on top of a typographic placeholder instead of the consonant in front of it.

Other things I've noticed:

  • Many words use a combination of different fonts, like Maltese 'Paċi' (belly), Pali 'Sāma' (wing), Turkish 'Barış' (branch), Samoan 'Filemū' (branch), or Yémba 'Mbwέne' (neck). I mean... come on... a graphic designer working for UNESCO should've known better. At least you can just use Noto Sans. Look at 'Мир' (branch/wing). It's just terrible.
  • Also, 'Мир' appears twice (or more?) If there were to be many instances of the word, there should probably be as many as the modern languages in which 'Мир' means peace (Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Serbian, etc).
  • I know this is getting petty... I feel like Pali 'Sāma' should've probably been set in some Brahmic script rather than IAST.
  • According to Wiktionary, խաղաղութիւն (wing) seems to be Old Armenian and the modern Armenian word is slightly different?
