Suggestions on learning abstract grammar via concrete examples?

I love learning languages.

Unfortunately, my mind has a serious problem understanding and remembering grammar rules, especially in heavily-inflected languages like Polish or Russian. I can recite phrases with perfect pronunciation but can never remember how the grammar works.

So: any suggestions on learning it through actual sentences and not by abstract grammar tables? Maybe just learn hundreds of phrases for each conjugation/declension?
