What did our learners love reading in 2018?

2018 was a year of reading, of exciting tales of adventure, of growing up, of friendship and of reflection. Our learners, young and old, loved the classic stories, exercises and audio resources provided alongside our Graded Readers. They learned a lot of new vocabulary, grammar and had plenty to discuss too.

So here are our top six Readers from last year, as chosen by our students and teachers. Have you read them with your students yet?

Level 1: Disney Pixar Finding Nemo

Finding Nemo is one of Disney Pixar’s most successful films – and is the 10th most popular animation of all time.

Young people all over the world are familiar with the little fish’s exciting adventures; and his father’s scary quest to rescue him after he is caught by a fisherman.

This particular fishy tale is adapted to suit beginner level learners. Not only do students engage with the familiar characters, but they can also relate to his experiences. It’s Nemo’s very first day at school – what will it be like and what will he see and do?

Level 2: The Jungle Book

A classic and timeless story of friendship, adventures and growing up, The Jungle Book has been loved by children all over the world since 1894.

The story follows Mowgli, a little boy who grows up in the jungle, raised by a family of wolves. He learns to live with the animals and soon becomes one of the pack. But life is not all fun and games; there’s a Tiger called Sheer Khan who wants to eat him – and lots of other dangers! What will happen to Mowgli and will he ever live with humans again?

Level 3: David Copperfield

Charles Dickens published David Copperfield in 1850. Today, despite its age, it’s still a well-loved story – and also one of our most popular Graded Readers.

Your students will enjoy every minute of this gripping saga. It follows David Copperfield, a boy with a happy life – that is until his mother remarries and his step-father treats him badly.

He is sent away to school, and soon his mother tragically dies. After he’s forced to work in London and life becomes unpleasant for David. He decides to run away and start life anew, and pursue an unforgettable adventure.

Level 3: The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz is a story that became part of American culture. When a great storm hits Kansas, young Dorothy is swept away – alongside her dog Toto – to a mysterious and magical land known as Oz.

On her adventures, Dorothy meets some new friends – a cowardly lion, a scarecrow with no brain and a tin man without a heart.

Together, they follow the Yellowbrick Road to find the Wizard of Oz so that Dorothy can get home and her friends can get the things that they need.

Your students will love this charming story and all its interesting characters.

Level 4: 1984

This dark story by George Orwell is about government control and the dangers society might face in the future.

Following a man named Winston Smith, this very human story explores themes of freedom, resistance and love in a place where no one seems to be in charge of their own lives.

Winston dreams of a happier future – but will it ever happen for him and the people who live in 1984?

Teens and adult learners will enjoy this novel adaptation. It’s an excellent springboard for discussion, debate and a look at some social issues that are still relevant even today.

Level 5: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Meet Charlie Bucket, a young boy who lives in a small house, with a very big family. Charlie loves chocolate, but he hasn’t got enough money to buy any.

One day, after a long time saving up enough money to buy his favorite Wonka bar, he finds a Golden Ticket. It’s a very special ticket that lets him visit Willy Wonka’s famous chocolate factory.

There he meets other children who have won the same prize. Unfortunately, they are not as nice as he is – and lots of strange and scary things happen during the visit to the factory.

Your learners are sure to enjoy this fascinating story and all the exercises and activities that go with it.
