Is it possible/efficient to learn a language by translating a book written in that language.

I feel like if I were to take books written in spanish, like harry potter or something, and translate the sentences, over time I might begin to notice patterns and deduce what words likely mean what and so forth.

But I never see anything about that except for my high school spanish teacher who constantly recommended we watch spanish soap operas (because of actor/actresses expressiveness). So I wonder if it is really a feasible idea?
