How do you tell the difference between the Arabic letters n (ن) and z (ز)?

I've tried searching for this but still I haven't been able to find anything on it. This might be different for nastaliq, but from what I can tell, the final positions for n and z are nearly identical. For example, [الن] and [الز] look almost exactly the same. Even if there are few words that overlap in a final n or z, what about loanwords?
