Hey Reddit! So, I have a question for you folks. I have been studying Spanish for a while now and I’m really quite interested in furthering my speaking abilities and my conversational skills. One of the best ways to do so—that I’ve heard from you guys at least—is getting into language exchange programs online.
So my question is: would you recommend online programs to younger language learners? I’m currently in high school so this would apply to me.
I just have a few concerns. First off, I’m not quite sure how well I’d be able to hold a conversation in Spanish, as the curriculum I’m in at school focuses more on writing and grammar rules then speaking. I mean, grammar is important to learning a language, but so is being able to actually speak to people and I don’t get much practice in that aspect :/
Also, and more to the point I’d say, is that I’m nervous to join an online program at my age. Besides the fact that I might be pretty inept at speaking Spanish, I don’t know the general outlook on younger language learners. Are the programs generally safe and are the teachers/communities receptive to younger learners? I’m sure that for the most part they’re harmless but from the time that we were first shown the Internet, people my age have been conditioned to trust no one on the Internet. Then again, I’m asking strangers on Reddit for advice so maybe I’m just being paranoid and hypocritical.
If you guys think that I shouldn’t try some online programs, do you have any recommendations for ways to improve my speaking abilities without them? Any advice is appreciated.
