What are some interesting things you've noticed when you change between your native/heritage language and the mainstream language in your country?

I'm curious about the interesting things you may experience when you change between your native/heritage language and the mainstream language in your country, because they are oftentimes not the same one, or very different from each other. For example, Breton to French or Sichuanese to Mandarin. Do you know any examples?
