Audio-based learning?

Hey friends,

Doing some long-term planning for a trip to Japan in a year or so, and I'd love to learn some conversational Japanese if I can.

I have about 40 minutes commute each day I'd love to take advantage of. A friend of mine learned some Spanish with audio CDs years ago, are there any phone apps around these days that are good to listen to while driving?

I know it wouldn't help me learn to read... is it possible to learn to speak a bit without the visual aspect of the language?
