Assuming you have no mother tongue, which existing popular language would be the easiest to learn, and why?

There are plenty of sites that say "easiest languages for English people," but what if you didn't know English to begin with? Would English be the easiest, syntactically? Or would it be another language?

Take into consideration writing vs speaking: is one language easily written but hard to speak, or vice versa?

Also, take into consideration the popularity of the language in the modern world.
