To people who have learned Russian as a foreign language

Hello everyone,

I'm considering start learning a new language in a near future, and Russian really got my attention lately. But I'd like to hear from a couple people who have actually done it, to try to get some insight.

What kind of approach did you use in your learning process, what would you say helped the most? What is your current relation to the Russian language and society, do you ever feel like it was a lot of effort in vain, have you ever suggested a friendin to start learning Russian? On the internet you eventually read a lot of not so nice things about russia and russian society, and as a gay man I have some mixed feelings about it. What are your opinions? If you are a native speaker reading this, how do you feel about foreigners learning your language? Do russians in general are supportive to learners or is common to see the stereotypical french reaction (speak it well or don't speak it at all)?
