People who mastered French as a second language, how did you go about tackling verb conjugation?

Trying to learn French right now and it seems like verb conjugation is one of my biggest obstacles. Did you memorize conjugation through brute force? Or did you learn sentences/vocubulary and let grammar come naturally?
