Is it appropriate to ask for help here? (Spanish)

I’ll post this incase it is. Feel free to delete it if it isn’t.

Im having trouble knowing what version of haber to use when talking about “had been” doing something.

Here’s what I think. When you are referencing a specific time description you use hube, hubiste, hubo, etc.

Example: Cuando llegaste anoche, hube estado esperandote.

And when you are speaking in general you use había.

Example:

Cuando te encontré, yo había estado esperandote toda mi vida.

Is this correct? I’ve asked a few native speakers and they seem to think the imperfect form “había” is usually used.
