How likely is it for a multi generational family to maintain their heritage language in an English speaking country?

How likely is it for the heritage language to be passed down through more than a couple generations after immigrating to a country like US or Canada? Would it be really unusual to speak the heritage language at home if the grandparents or great grandparents immigrated from that country and the children haven't been there?
