Best series / company for starting out

I was watching one of Steve Kauffman's videos, and he was talking about what he does when he's starting a language "from scratch".

His answer: Get a "teach yourself book" and browse through to get a sense of language structure and concepts.

It's been a long time since I started a language "from scratch" where I have literally no prior knowledge, experience or exposure, and I'm toying with starting in this direction.

Steve rattled off Assimil, Teach Yourself, etc... And he happened to have Living Language box 9n his desk.

Just curious what the consensus is on the best company / publisher in this category is.

So the question is: Across any / all languages you have studied, which publisher / resource does the best job creating good materials for people just starting out?
