Should you keep pressing ahead to read a book if you are struggling through it?

I'm reading a short novel in French and I often stop each chapter to take a break or use the dictionary. I'm rewarded by certain visuals and paragraphs that I understand but other passages remain muddled. Would my reading improve if I push myself to read more chapters for an hour or two? Or would that not help my reading comprehension much ?

Does it take months or longer to build up my reading fluency?
